What we find now is more live service games targeting a variety of audiences. Nowadays, developers and publishers won’t fight much for exclusives on certain platforms, instead, pushing into other markets to widen their audience who are settled on their gaming platform of choice. However, gaming is becoming more and more competitive across a variety of platforms. See the Nintendo Store backlog for that content. However, Nintendo’s IP’s are still very secure, and are largely only available in the Nintendo Switch nowadays, only becoming cross platforms if they are playable on the Nintendo DS systems or on the Nintendo Switch. However, games like God of War 2018 and Horizon Zero Dawn are no longer PlayStation exclusives and have become cross platform with recently developed ports for the PC, years after their initial release mind you. Meanwhile, Sony has plenty of exclusives, like the God of War, Gran Turismo, Horizon, Resistance, and more.

Games like Halo 3 on the Xbox 360 was originally a console exclusive, but since the advent of Microsoft’s gain on the PC player base and through the development of the MCC on PC, it technically means Halo 3 is now a cross platform game. In other words, it is not a gaming exclusive. Now let’s apply that to gaming.Īll it means for games is these games work on more than one gaming system.

20 years ago, there was largely only Xbox, PlayStation, and the Windows PC.īut nowadays, you have different gaming operating systems on PC, including MAC and Linux OSs. Notifications from the app alert users whenever a building has been completed, there are resources to collect.Over the years, the gaming industry has evolved a lot, with there being more major competitors and new styles of gaming coming around. Furthermore, mobile platforms play even further into the free-to-play micro-transaction loop of FoE. Outdated seems like an accurate description as the GUI assets found on the mobile client look more modern and sleek. City organisation, combat, menu navigation and even resource collection feel clunky and outdated using a track pad or even a mouse. Having downloaded FoE onto my phone, I find little reason to go back to using their PC version. Those games were relatively easy to pilot on a computer, but were also mechanically more simply than FoE. I remember playing early iterations of the genre, games like Restaurant City and Social Empires, on Facebook many years ago. FoE Mobile Client withĪs mentioned earlier, Forge of Empires, and the free-to-play quasi-strategy game genre it occupies was developed with social media and mobile devices in mind. The fact FoE is free-to-play and simple game play wise are redeeming aspects in terms of accessibility for younger students, but the experience more than undermine these benefits in my opinion. Possible alternatives include Sid Meier’s Civilization, Spore, Age of Empires, Tropico, the Anno series, and more. At the end of the day there are simply games which are far superior in terms of game play, depth of content and historical/cultural detail, and richness of game play. This philosophy permeates through almost all aspects of FoE, and what little educational potential that could be derived from the game’s setting and progression system through various stages of human civilisation is heavily at odds with the actual game play. As I have discussed in my previous FoE journal entry, the game is designed on free-to-play mobile game principles which emphasise hollow progress and exploit human psychology to tempt players into making in-game micro transaction purchases to speed up said progress. When thinking about the educational potential of a game like Forge of Empires, its hard to see depth in game play and content that would serve a class curriculum.
